MT Hephaestus

The newest wreck dive off Gozo, the Hephaestus, was scuttled later in 2022 just off Xatt l-Ahmar on the south coast of Gozo.
Originally an oil tanker, the Hephaestus ran aground during a storm in 2018, just off Qawra point.

Since that date the former tanker was cleaned up and prepared to become an the 4th artificial reef off Gozo, sitting perpendicular to the coast at a depth range of 32-45m.
Due to its depth it is certainly a dive for more experienced divers, and there are many rooms and passageways to explore for those who enjoy wreck penetration.
The overall scale of the wreck alone is extremely impressive!

The dive can also be made from the shore or boat, but prepare for a bit of a surface swim should you look to make the shore entrance. Divers need to be careful when managing air consumption for the swim back.

As a new wreck, life is slowly finding its way to Hephaestus. Already smaller reef fish and crustaceans are calling the wreck home. Over the past years some lucky divers have even had sightings of Mola Mola!

If you have been brought to Malta and Gozo for the world renowned wreck diving, then this dive is not to be missed.
