Discover the Ġgantija Temples
While to the dive community Gozo is best known for its stunning dive sites and crystal-clear waters, there’s a whole other side to the island waiting to be explored. A wealth of history above the surface. If you're taking a day off from diving or just want to make the most of your time on land, a visit to the Ġgantija Temples is a must!
These ancient megalithic structures are older than the Egyptian pyramids and offer a fascinating glimpse into one of the world’s earliest civilizations—all just a short drive from your dive base.
What Are the Ġgantija Temples?
Located near the village of Xagħra, the Ġgantija Temples (pronounced jgan-tee-ya) are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are among the oldest free-standing structures in the world, dating back to around 3600 BCE.
The name “Ġgantija” comes from the Maltese word for “giant,” as local legend once believed the temples were built by giants. When you see the size of the massive stone blocks used—some weighing over 50 tons—it’s easy to understand why.
These temples were likely used for religious and ceremonial purposes and are remarkably well-preserved. Walking through the site feels like stepping back in time.
A Perfect Surface Interval Adventure
Visiting the Ġgantija Temples makes for an ideal non-diving day activity. Whether you’re off-gassing between deep dives or taking a break from the water, the site is an easy and rewarding outing.
Why visit during your surface time?
It’s a unique cultural experience just 15 minutes from most dive centres.
It offers a peaceful contrast to the buzz of dive boats and gear.
The site is compact yet rich in history—perfect for a half-day trip.
What to Expect
Your visit starts at the interpretation centre, which includes exhibits explaining the prehistoric culture, artifacts found on-site, and interactive displays that bring the ancient world to life.
From there, you'll walk a short path to the temples themselves: two main structures surrounded by a dry-stone wall. You’ll be amazed at the architecture and the level of craftsmanship that went into building these temples over 5,500 years ago.
Travel tip: The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon when the light is great for photos and the site is less crowded.
Combine It with a Local Lunch or Vineyard Visit
After your visit, why not make a day of it? The surrounding village of Xagħra offers charming cafés and restaurants, or you could stop by a local vineyard like Ta’ Mena Estate for a wine tasting—another great surface interval treat.
