Why is Gozo the Best Diving Destination in the Mediterranean?
Crystal-clear waters, dramatic underwater landscapes, and a laid-back island charm — Gozo has long been hailed as one of the best diving destinations, if not the best, in the Mediterranean.
Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a curious beginner, our beautiful little island offers something truly special both above and below the surface.
But what exactly makes Gozo stand out among so many other Mediterranean diving spots?
Exceptional Water Clarity and Visibility
One of the first things divers notice in Gozo is just how clear the water is. Visibility often exceeds 30 metres, allowing for a spectacular view of the island’s underwater topography. The warm, calm seas make diving conditions ideal almost year-round, with temperatures ranging from 15°C in winter to 28°C in summer.
This clarity means that every dive — from wreck explorations to reef dives — offers vivid views of marine life, rock formations, and the shimmering play of sunlight filtering through the sea.
A Wealth of Dive Sites – All Close By
Gozo may be small, but its coastline is packed with variety. There are a vast amount of dive sites, all within a short drive or boat ride from each other.
From world-famous locations like the Blue Hole in Dwejra to hidden gems like Hondoq Reef (on our doorstep) and Billinghurst Cave, there’s something to suit every diver’s taste.
As Gozo is so small you can easily do multiple dives in one day, even when travelling and diving independently. Perhaps a wreck in the morning, cavern in the afternoon, and a night dive after sunset? Everything is accessible.
Stunning Underwater Topography
Gozo’s underwater landscape is the real star of the show. Towering walls, dramatic arches, and atmospheric caves create unforgettable diving experiences.
Sites like the Inland Sea or Cathedral Cave offer an otherworldly experience. Mother nature has been an incredible architect, forming some spectacular features for us divers to explore. These grand natural designs, combined with the great visibility and the play of the light bursting through the surface make for amazing memories (and pictures for those diving with a camera).
The immediate depth around the vast majority of the coast means that many sites also make for amazing tec dives.

Wreck Diving Heaven
For wreck enthusiasts, Gozo doesn’t disappoint.
Artificial reefs such as the MV Karwela, Cominoland, Xlendi and now the Hephaestus have become thriving habitats for marine life and fascinating dive sites for us to explore. The famous P31 in Comino is also noteworthy. At a maximum depth of only 20m, this is the perfect place for budding wreck enthusiasts to stoke their passion for wreck diving. Experienced divers will also love exploring this ex-navy patrol boat.
Resting between 30 and 40 metres deep, these wrecks are accessible to recreational divers while still offering challenges for those seeking technical dives or wreck penetration experiences. The Hephaestus is also an incredible technical dive, being considerably bigger than its neighbouring wrecks, as well as offering more depth, it is extremely impressive.
Vibrant Marine Life
Gozo’s waters are teeming with life. Expect to encounter octopus, cuttlefish, groupers, moray eel, some species of Nudibranch, and many more varieties of reef fish. Predatory fish such as Blue Runner and Amberjack, as well as Barracuda are also common. Get in touch to see which marine animals you are more likely to encounter at different times of the year.
Although Gozo isn’t a coral destination, its biodiversity and thriving fish populations make every dive a new adventure.
Perfect for All Levels of Divers
Whether you’re taking your very first breaths underwater or completing advanced training, Gozo caters to all experience levels.
The calm conditions and shallow bays make it ideal for Open Water courses, while deeper wrecks, reefs and technical routes attract experienced divers from around the world. Many local dive centres (like ours!) offer all of the PADI core courses, the vast majority of PADI speciality courses, PADI Professional levels and PADI technical courses, ensuring you can grow your skills while enjoying Gozo’s spectacular scenery.
Year-Round Diving and Mediterranean Lifestyle
Gozo’s mild climate means diving is possible all year round. Even in winter, the sea remains comfortable enough for diving, and the island’s tranquil pace of life offers the perfect post-dive relaxation.
You can expect a minimum temperature of 15 - 16 degrees Celsius for a short time in the winter. Those used to diving in colder waters at home will be more than comfortable, and enjoy the peace of visiting some iconic dive sites without any other divers!
In the summer the water can reach up to 28 degrees, with temperature at depth reaching around 26, so divers really get the luxury of warm water diving.
Between dives Gozo offers a so much to explore. There is an incredibly rich history, beautiful cuisine and natural beauty surrounding us. This makes for a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation for our visitors.
A Welcoming Diving Community
Gozo is known for its welcoming diving community. Divers and instructors from around the world love to share the island’s underwater beauty. Whether you join a guided dive, take a course, or rent gear for a shore dive, you’ll find friendly help and expert advice.
